11/12/10 Katie's Healthy Eating Journal: Friday

Yesterday I discussed the crazy hormones that have taken over my body since I got pregnant.  Not only was I feeling insecure, exhausted, emotional, etc. my Mom has been seriously ill.  Since September 1st she has had migraines every day until the present.  She's always had an occasional migraine in the past but never one for more than 60 days in a row and now they occur 3-4 times a day 1-2 per night.  As the migraines have gotten worse her symptoms have become worse.  Pain is more pronounced in every part of her body, particularly her back and neck.  She has constant flu like symptoms, pressure to urinate frequently, aversion to light and food.  In the past three weeks she has lost 14 pounds and can no longer go out of the house.  When the migraines get bad she cannot stop throwing up.  She has been to the ER 5 times but they just give her an injection to try and stop the migraines and then send her home.  Now they have become so severe 3 hours later the migraines come back.  She's seen a neurologist; tried homeopathic drugs first, migraine medication and prevention meds and they didn't work.  Narcotics are known to break up cluster migraines but they bother her stomach so much she ends up throwing those up too.  A week ago I thought she was on her deathbed.  We were afraid to admit her to the hospital because they were saying her depression was causing all this pain and we didn't want her to end up in a psychiatric ward.  The problem is, my mom does have depression but it has always been treated with a mild anti-depressant.  She has never been seriously depressed.  If you knew my Mom she was not making the pain up and she was not clinically depressed.  She's typically an upbeat person - very positive.  Problem is, no doctor can find anything wrong in her blood work or MRI's.  I think it's easier to see she is on an anti-depressant and use that as the "label" for her problems.  Depression can cause fibromyalgia (basically severe pain with no treatment and no distinct cause) and I feel that this was just a cop out because the doctors don't know what's wrong with her.  My Mom has pretty much not left the house since September 1st except for doctor's appointments.  She is in screaming agony pain with no light at the end of the tunnel.  If she wasn't depressed before she is now.  Who wouldn't be?  It's heartbreaking because I know how badly she wants to be able to hold and cuddle her grandson.  I'm hormonal, overwhelmed with a newborn, exhausted, and completely worried about my Mom.
